Searching for the ideal distance between lightness and security
"When it comes to folding umbrellas, if you choose a lightweight one, it's small and you get wet. On the other hand, a sturdy size is heavy and a pain to carry around." We have heard such comments from many customers. As our previous model, " pentagon72 ," was well received, the desire for a larger size grew. People want to be able to protect not only their bodies but also their bags from sudden rain. In order to respond to this desire in good faith, we have begun a new challenge: increasing the size while maintaining the "ultimate lightness."
The 60cm wall and the unyielding pride of "Pentagon"
At the beginning of development, we considered a 60cm main rib size, similar to a typical long umbrella. However, we faced a major obstacle. The Pentagon series is made up of five ribs to maximize lightness. The larger the size, the greater the surface area exposed to the wind, making it more difficult to achieve structural balance. To achieve the 60cm size, we needed to thicken the shaft and add more ribs. However, this would have undermined the core of the Pentagon series, which is to "forget you're even holding it."
Only 79g. The golden ratio of lightness and reliability.
We repeatedly made prototypes and tested them. How far could we expand the size without changing the structure? What was the limit where we could maintain the ideal lightness while still passing tests at a wind speed of 15 m/s? The answer we arrived at was the perfect size: 54 cm ribs and 85 cm diameter. The fabric is made with 15 denier ultra-fine yarn and features a tear-resistant ripstop structure. The frame is made with carbon fiber, a material used in aircraft construction, which has made it incredibly light, weighing just 79 g. This is the best answer we could come up with at the moment, combining convenience and mobility.
