In recent years, summers in Japan have become so hot that they can be life-threatening. A sun-blocking parasol, which protects the skin from the sun's rays, is now an essential item when going out. However, choosing a convenient automatic opening/closing system means it's heavy and bulky, while prioritizing lightness means the sun's blocking performance is insufficient, creating a dilemma. In the end, people end up taking their parasol out of their bag because they can't stand the weight... We wanted to put an end to that scene. We set out to develop the ultimate all-weather umbrella, one that can be carried in your bag every day, without compromising on sun-blocking performance or convenience.
"Thick, heavy, and hard" blackout fabric: a huge wall
Achieving both light-weight and light-blocking performance was the biggest hurdle we faced. While 100% light-blocking is not uncommon these days, parasol fabric tends to be thicker and heavier than umbrellas. The stiffness of the fabric was particularly critical for automatic opening and closing umbrellas. If the fabric was too stiff, it would become too thick when folded, compromising portability and placing a heavy load on the frame during the opening and closing motion, hindering smooth movement. Without resolving this fabric issue, we would never have been able to complete the ideal parasol.
A unique three-layer structure that is just 0.06mm thin
What we arrived at was an exceptionally thin and soft fabric, between 0.06mm and 0.09mm. Woven with ultra-fine 20-denier thread, this fabric is incredibly flexible and smoothly follows the complex movements of automatic opening and closing. Concerns that thinner fabrics would result in a loss of light-blocking properties were resolved with our unique "three-layer structure." By integrating the fabric layer, light-blocking layer, and polyurethane layer using advanced technology, we were able to achieve not only 100% light blocking, but also 99.9% of UV rays, visible light, and even near-infrared rays that reach deep into the skin, all at this thin thickness.
