The Future of Umbrellas and a New Relationship with Water Repellency

Have you ever felt recently that the water repellency of your favorite umbrella seems to fade a little too quickly? In fact, a major change towards environmental sustainability is currently taking place in the umbrella manufacturing industry.

Due to global environmental regulations, the prevailing trend in umbrella fabric manufacturing has shifted to "PFOA-free" materials, eliminating substances identified as harmful. We are currently in a transitional period towards completely eco-friendly production, and to be frank, the latest fabrics tend to have slightly less durable water repellency compared to conventional treatments. We view this change not merely as a decline in specifications, but as an important step towards environmentally conscious manufacturing.

Water Repellency Changes from Where Your Palms Touch

When we fold a parasol, rain umbrella, or all-weather umbrella, we instinctively touch the fabric. Especially the "tie (name band)" that holds the entire umbrella together and the folds of the fabric are directly affected by hand oils and friction, which conspicuously causes water repellency to diminish. To comfortably use your favorite umbrella for a long time, it's essential to understand the characteristics of modern umbrellas and perform regular maintenance, gently caring for them at home.

The Right Way to Choose Between "Waterproof" and "Water Repellent"

Before you start cleaning, it's important to know how to choose care products. Generally, products primarily containing fluorine repel water without blocking fibers ("water repellent"), while those primarily containing silicone form a film on the surface ("waterproof").

However, it is not uncommon for products intended for water repellency to be collectively referred to as "waterproof sprays" in stores. The important thing is not to judge by the name alone, but to always check the ingredient list on the back and the suitability indication, such as "can be used on umbrellas."

The care product we recommend for modern umbrellas is "Lifoop," a care agent developed by a chemical manufacturer. Through a hybrid method combining fluorine and silicone, it achieves reliable water and stain repellency while maintaining the umbrella's original beautiful texture and breathability.

The Wisdom of "Layering" to Prevent Stains and Cultivate Your Umbrella

When using a spray, the most important tip is "never to apply too much at once."

If you generously spray it on with good intentions, the liquid can accumulate on the fabric surface, causing stains. Just a small amount, a fine mist lightly covering the surface, is sufficient to be effective.

If you want to achieve a higher effect, instead of applying it all at once, repeat the process of "spraying a small amount over the entire surface, letting it dry completely, and then layering another small amount." This thin, layered care prevents stains while creating a strong water-repellent layer.

This little bit of maintenance is not just a chore, but a rich time to cultivate your favorite umbrella with your own hands. The next rainy day should become a little more anticipated.
