What's the difference between complete shading and 100% shading? What you need to know about parasols

When choosing a parasol, you often see terms like "complete shading" and "100% shading." They both sound the same, but behind these terms lie differences in the manufacturer's approach and sincerity towards the product.

This time, we at HEATBLOCK will explain in detail why we choose to use the expression "100% light-blocking fabric " rather than "completely light-blocking."

Both are "top-class fabrics"

Generally, both notations refer to the use of extremely high-performance fabric that has a 100% light-blocking rate in a test conducted under JIS standards (JIS L 1055 A method). There is no significant difference between the two in terms of the fabric's "light-blocking ability."

Why are the expressions different? Differences in manufacturers' stances

So why are there different names for them? The answer lies in whether the word refers to the "fabric" or the "entire product."

We purposely avoid using the word "perfect" for three main reasons.

  • Considers the reality of the product
Although the fabric itself blocks 100% of light, parasols are three-dimensional products made by sewing together multiple parts. We cannot completely rule out the possibility of a small amount of light leaking through holes made by the sewing needle, so we avoid using the word "perfect" to mean "perfect without any exceptions."

  • Comply with advertising display rules
Advertising rules such as the Act against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations generally prohibit extreme expressions such as "perfect" and "absolute."

  • We value honesty with our customers
We want you to be satisfied with your choice after honestly informing you of the structural limitations of the product. This is our approach to manufacturing.

Going beyond blocking light: HEATBLOCK's commitment

HEATBLOCK not only "reduces glare" but also blocks the various effects of sunlight, and has published the following figures:

  • 100% UV (ultraviolet) protection: Thoroughly blocks UV rays that cause sunburn and blemishes, protecting your skin's health.

  • Visible light blocking: High levels of glare-causing light are blocked, ensuring comfortable vision even under strong sunlight.

  • Near-infrared rays: Significantly reduces near-infrared rays, which are the main cause of heat and penetrate deep into the skin. This reduces the temperature rise under the umbrella, providing an overwhelming heat-blocking effect (coolness).

Summary: Understand the background and choose your parasol wisely

Rather than choosing based solely on the sound of the words "complete blackout" or "100% blackout," we recommend paying attention to the following points.

  1. Are there solid grounds (test data) for the figures?

  2. Is there information about cooling (near-infrared blocking) in addition to UV protection?

  3. Does the manufacturer honestly explain the structure of the product?

We at HEATBLOCK will continue to provide accurate information and the highest level of functionality in order to deliver products that will effectively protect you from the sun.
