It fits snugly into the gaps between your luggage. Its "ultimate thinness" of 23mm gives you freedom on rainy days.
I want to eliminate the "stress of owning things"
As an umbrella specialist for over 30 years, I have been asking myself, "How can we make umbrellas a tool that doesn't burden the user?" Folding umbrellas are convenient tools, but many people complain that they are "bulky in their bags" and "too heavy to carry around."
It's especially depressing when you hear the morning weather forecast say, "It might rain today." The umbrella you forcefully stuff into your bag takes up space, and if it doesn't rain, you end up regretting it, as it becomes just an annoying piece of luggage. We wanted to solve these small everyday stresses with the power of technology. That was the starting point for developing the FLATLITE Standard. Our goal was to create an umbrella that would fit easily into the gaps in your bag, just like a smartphone, so portable you'd forget you had it with you.
A maniacal trial and error process that pushes the limits of materials and structure
In our quest for thinness, the first thing we did was select the fabric. Normal umbrella fabrics inevitably become thick when folded. So we turned our attention to lightweight ripstop fabric woven with ultra-fine 15-denier thread, the same kind used in stockings. By combining this delicate fabric with a uniquely developed thin frame structure, we were able to achieve an astonishing thickness of just about 23mm.
However, simply making it thinner would be easy. My uncompromising commitment was to maintain the "essential functionality" of an umbrella. "Thin, yet large enough to open. And most importantly, unbreakable." To overcome this contradictory challenge, the frame design was repeatedly adjusted down to the millimeter. Some of the ribs are made from lightweight, strong carbon fiber, the same material used in aircraft. Furthermore, by combining this with highly elastic materials, we were able to create a tough frame that can withstand strong winds of 15 m/s.
The "tough" design and subtle ingenuity behind the lightness
In pursuing the specifications, I was particularly particular about the use of "silicone washers." In fact, the main cause of water seeping out from the inside of an umbrella during heavy rain is the tiny gaps where the fabric and ribs connect. With the FLATLITE Standard, we have significantly reduced water penetration by inserting specially designed silicone washers into these gaps.
A new standard for enjoying rainy days "lightly"
When you pick up this umbrella, you may be surprised at how thin and light it is. However, what we want you to experience for yourself is the "experience" of how light it makes going out on rainy days. By keeping it in the side pocket of your bag or in the pocket of your outerwear, you won't have to panic in a sudden downpour or sigh at the weight of your luggage.
As an environmentally friendly product, we have pursued the ideal form of a modern tool, such as using a PFOA-free water repellent that does not contain substances harmful to humans or the environment. The FLATLITE Standard is a product that combines my experience and meticulous Japanese design philosophy. Why not throw away the conventional wisdom about folding umbrellas and start a new, lighter, and more comfortable life? We hope to bring smart peace of mind to your daily life.
